The most common regret we hear is that the previous patio was too small. A four-person dining table with chairs pulled out needs roughly a twelve-foot square on its own. Add a grill zone, a seating group around a fire feature, and clear walking lanes and the honest requirement is usually four to six hundred square feet. We stake and mark the shape on the ground so you can walk it, set a chair in it, and adjust the footprint before we form anything.

Shape matters too. Curved and radiused edges soften a large slab and read as landscaped rather than industrial, while an octagonal or angled corner can capture a view or work around an existing tree. We form curves with flexible forming material rather than faking them with saw cuts.

Broom finish is the economical, durable default and looks perfectly clean when the edges are hand-tooled and the joints are laid out symmetrically. A smooth trowel finish suits covered porches where rain never reaches. Exposed aggregate reveals the natural stone in the mix, hides dirt exceptionally well, and provides excellent grip. Stamped and colored concrete gives you the flagstone or slate look at a fraction of the cost of real stone.

Many of our Anderson and Greenville patio clients combine finishes: a stamped border framing a broom-finished field, or a colored band separating a dining area from a fire pit area. It costs far less than stamping everything and creates the visual structure that makes a large slab feel designed.

Every patio needs slope, generally about an eighth to a quarter inch per foot running away from the house. We check the elevation of the door threshold, the siding line and the existing grade so the finished slab never traps water against the foundation or sits above the weep holes on brick veneer.

Where a patio meets an existing porch, slab or pool deck, expansion joint material isolates the two so they can move independently, and we match elevations so there is no toe-catching lip. On sloped Upstate lots we frequently pair the patio with a low retaining or seat wall to hold grade and create usable flat space where none existed.

Pouring add-ons at the same time as the main slab is dramatically cheaper than coming back later. Common additions include poured steps with tooled or stamped risers, seat walls capped in colored concrete or stone veneer, a reinforced fire pit pad, footings for a future pergola, a sidewalk connecting to the driveway, and conduit sleeves run under the slab for lighting and outlets.
