Retaining walls fail for two reasons: an inadequate footing and no drainage behind the wall. Saturated red clay generates enormous hydrostatic pressure, and a wall built without a drainage system is being asked to hold back water as well as soil. We design for both from the start.

Poured Concrete Walls

A poured wall is the strongest option and the right answer for taller walls, walls carrying a surcharge such as a driveway or structure above, and anywhere a clean architectural face is wanted. We excavate and pour a reinforced spread footing sized for the wall height and soil conditions, set vertical dowels, form the stem, and pour a continuous, heavily reinforced wall.

Faces can be left with a smooth form finish, board-formed for texture, veneered in stone or brick, or given a formliner pattern. Caps can be poured integrally or added as a separate colored or stamped element that ties into an adjacent patio.

Segmental Block and Boulder Walls

Segmental retaining wall block is a flexible, attractive option for landscape walls and terraces. Built correctly it starts with a compacted aggregate leveling pad, a buried base course, geogrid reinforcement extending back into the retained soil at specified intervals, and clean drainage stone behind the block face.

For rustic settings and larger grade changes, boulder walls can be a cost-effective and natural-looking solution. Either system still needs the same drainage discipline as a poured wall.

Drainage: The Part You Cannot See

Behind every wall we build there is a drainage system: free-draining washed stone against the back face, a perforated drain pipe at the base wrapped in filter fabric, weep holes or outlets daylighting to a safe discharge point, and a compacted soil or clay cap at the top to shed surface water away from the backfill.

We also address what happens above the wall. Downspouts, driveway runoff and neighboring property drainage all get evaluated, because a perfectly built wall will still fail if a roof is dumping hundreds of gallons directly into the backfill during every storm.

Height, Engineering and Permits

Walls over roughly four feet, or shorter walls carrying a surcharge load, generally require engineered drawings and permitting in Anderson County and the Greenville municipalities. We identify that requirement during the estimate rather than after work begins, and we work with local engineers to get sealed drawings when they are needed.

Terracing two shorter walls instead of building one tall wall is often less expensive, easier to permit, and creates planting space that makes the hillside look intentional rather than fortified.

How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering?

As a general rule, walls up to about four feet with no surcharge above them do not require engineered drawings, but that threshold varies by jurisdiction. We confirm the local requirement before quoting.

Why do retaining walls lean or bulge?

Almost always inadequate drainage combined with an undersized or shallow footing. Water trapped behind a wall in clay soil produces pressure the wall was never designed to resist.

Poured concrete or block?

Poured concrete is stronger, better for tall or surcharged walls, and gives an architectural face. Block is often more economical for landscape-height walls and offers more texture and color options. We recommend based on height, load and appearance.

Can a retaining wall create a level backyard?

Yes, that is one of the most common reasons we build them on Upstate lots. A wall combined with imported fill and proper compaction can turn an unusable slope into a flat lawn, patio or play area.
